If you are diagnosed with osteoarthritis, most probably your condition will be classified under the  following stages:

A. Mild - this is characterized by a mild wear down of your joint cartilage. Symptoms are generally mild which may include occasional mild pain and brief morning stiffness.

B. Moderate- As the joint cartilage further wears away and joint fluid fails to lubricate and cushion the joint. Bone spurs or bone growth on the edge of the bone may develop and moving can be painful.

C. Severe- At this stage the pearly white cartilage may be totally worn away resulting to constant, severe pain. Your ability to perform the simplest task diminishes greatly; even your sleeping patterns may be affected.

Depending on the severity of your osteoarthritis your orthopedic doctor can recommend conservative to advance treatments. Initially oral medications will be prescribed, and you may be asked to improve on your lifestyle, attend physical therapy and follow a weight reduction program.  Furthermore your doctor may also recommend steroid injections or viscosupplementation as the treatment progresses and no relief is achieved. Eventually if all conservative measures are not working, your doctor may recommend joint surgery as a last option.

Osteoarthritis can be slowed down if they are found early. However, if you are diagnosed with sever osteoarthritis there isn't much choice for pain relief. So if you feel you have osteoarthritis go to your orthopedic doctor for immediate attention.
