Halloween is an exciting time for scary thrills and costume parties. However, studies also shows that Halloween is one of the days in a year which people get most of the common accidents like  cuts, burns and falls. Here are some safety tips to ensure you and your family enjoy the Halloween festivities safely:

1. Proper installation of Decorations- Prevent fall and slip accidents by following some simple precautions by installing decorations out of the floor or away from where people are walking or dancing. Fires and burns may be prevented by vigilantly handling and installing fireworks; and candles are in sturdy fire-safe holders or opt for battery operated candles which are safer. Also make sure to purchase government tested and approved decorations only. 

2. Dress not only to impress but safely- Children's costumes should be flame-resistant and should fit well. Masks, face paint and head dresses should not affect the wearer's vision. Also wear non slip, sturdy, and ready- to- run shoes.

3. Supervised trick or treating- Trick or treating activities for kids are sometimes dangerous, so plan which part of the neighborhood should you take your kids for trick or treating. Also bring flash lights for both parents and children. You may also ask your children to wear neon stickers which you would easily recognize.  

4. Prepare for the worst- You'll never know what can happen in a party or a short trip to the cemetery, so it is best to prepare for the unknown. If you are going on a trip, pack your first aid kits with some medication for allergy, headache, stomach acidity, and diarrhea. If you are hosting a party make sure your fire extinguishers are full and working, and a first aid kit should readily be available.

intheorIn the past we have been promoting exercise to increase functionality of the joint. We have also discussed the non-surgical methods of dealing with osteoarthritis.  Looking back we have learned that we treat osteoarthritis because, pain relief is essential in getting back functionality and improve overall health. Also we have learned that the more you become inactive the more your health deteriorates. If your everyday activities and functionality are being limited or halt by a painful knee, our suggestion is to get help ASAP.

The first line of treatment for osteoarthritis of the knee is always conservative non-surgical treatment. However, if these treatments does not relieve pain and improve function, your orthopedic doctor may recommend surgery. The choice of treatment should be a joint decision between you and your physician.
